As promised, this month’s do-it-yourself dōTERRA inspiration includes a homemade deodorant recipe starring none other than Thyme! But before we go there, let’s head outside to create a whimsical and functional Summer Luminary. It’s the perfect table addition for your next barbecue!
In a glass mason jar, place the following fresh fruits and herbs:
1-2 slices lemon
1-2 slices lime
1-2 sprigs fresh rosemary
Or just leave off the fruits and herb if you prefer. I like the simplicity of this simple blue ball jar with the bug repelling essential oils ,floating tea light and some raffia tied around the top to complete the look.
Fill jar ¾ full with water. Add 10 drops each of dōTERRA Arborvitae, Cedarwood, and Thyme, which are known to repel insects. Swish mixture in jar to distribute oils. Add a floating tea light for a unique insect-repelling luminary.
Do these fresh-smelling luminaries turn your thoughts toward other areas needing a fresh scent? If so, try making your own deodorant as a healthy and natural alternative to the commercial kind. Although this fun and inexpensive experiment may take some trial and error, you could land on a unique concoction perfect for your body. Take a moment to gather the following ingredients and give this Deodorant Stick a whirl!
You’ll need:
¼ cup aluminum-free baking soda (some are sensitive to baking soda so omit this if sensitivity occurs, you can up the arrowroot to make up the difference or try food grade diatomaceous earth. Here is one supplier that sells quality food grade diatomaceus earth.
¼ cup arrowroot or cornstarch
3 – 5 tablespoons coconut oil
15 drops Thyme* essential oil
Container : Mason Jar or Deodorant container I have reused my old ones but I prefer a small glass mason jar.
As with all the product you choose purity matters, choose non gmo top quality products from markets like Whole Foods or wherever you shop but please for the LOVE of all that is good DO NOT buy your essential oils at the market. Doterra essential oils are the most affordable purest essential oils on the market today. There are two other companies that sell pure essential oils and they are
- Combine baking soda, arrowroot, and essential oil in bowl.
- Combine coconut oil with other ingredients, one tablespoon at a time, until mixture reaches desired consistency.
- Press firmly into empty deodorant container and let sit until coconut oil solidifies or go the easy route like me and put into a small mason jar and scoop out as needed.
*Other recommended oils are Melaleuca aka Tea Tree, Lavender, Geranium, Lemongrass or Litsea. Note if using Lemongrass or Litsea use half the amount of drops.
Note: If you live in a warm climate, add one ounce of melted shea or cocoa butter to recipe. Beeswax pellets will also help harden your deodorant.
As you can see, dōTERRA has you covered from outdoors to underarms. As you let essential oils illuminate your summer nights and help you make the most of the great outdoors, have fun learning more about how to incorporate these aromas into your daily life and routine!
